SPORTS CENTRE CAFE

Cambridge University Sports Cafe
Cambridge

In March of 2024, we completed the design of Cambridge University Sports Centre's existing cafe. Our work encompassed interior design (including 3D renders to bring the vision to life), FF&E selection, project management, and the seamless execution of the fit-out.

Our redesign prioritises functionality and caters to a diverse clientele. The new cafe is multifunctional and works for regulars, university students seeking a study spot and visitors utilising the sports centre facilities, creating a vibrant and welcoming feeling for all.

In the brief, our client emphasised creating a light and inviting atmosphere that fosters a sense of well-being. Biophilic design principles were key, incorporating elements of nature to promote a connection with the outdoors. To achieve this, we supplied plenty of variety from The Good Plant Company, who provided all real planting for this scheme. Warm woody tones, neutrals and greens were integral colours across this project.

SPACE PLANNING

IMG_5072.jpg

To incorporate natural textures and visual interest, we worked with local contractors to create bespoke wooden wall panelling. We maintained a cohesive scheme by extending the green paint choice to the timber slatting, creating a unified flow. Maximising space was key to a successful scheme so we crafted a high-shelf bar, cleverly expanding seating options for customers.

For furniture selection, we specified the esPattio Bika and Marina tub chairs alongside the Abril high stool for a variety of seating options. We ensured our client was satisfied with the Bika chair as their primary choice by providing a sample to test its durability. Planters and grid storage systems double as soft partitions, subtly defining zones within the cafe. For those seeking privacy, high-back booths offer dedicated workspaces with a degree of acoustic soundproofing.

"Working with Layrd Design has been a real pleasure. We started with quite a vague brief, not really knowing what we wanted, but knowing more about what we didn't want. Eleanor and Will took the time to listen before presenting us with their ideas.

We were really pleased with what they suggested and despite questioning some of the choices, trusted them to make decisions in order to achieve the perfect mix of functionality and beautiful aesthetics. They spent time showing us examples of materials, colours and fabrics to be used which left everyone involved in the project feeling excited.

The refurbishment was completed on time and within the agreed schedule. The end result is beyond amazing, we are so pleased with it. They have managed to create a space that although feels fresh and new, feels like it has always been there. It fits into the existing space beautifully and the feedback from our customers has been superb. The only problem now is that people don't want to leave!

A big thanks to everyone involved in the project at Layrd Design and we look forward to the next time."

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

We reused furniture by reupholstering the existing booth and vinyl wrapped the TV wall with CIM Signs & Graphics rather than replacing it.

Shaw carpet tiles were used for sustainable flooring with the Floor Architecture III collection in Fragment and Formation. These tiles can be returned and recycled at the end of their life. We also applied the tiles with an underlay that will allow the flooring beneath to be restored when the carpet tiles are eventually lifted.

We work with local companies to reduce the carbon footprint of our projects. The artwork in this scheme was sourced from an independent Cambridge-based artist.
