Layrd Life: August 2024

August was packed with exciting events, collaborations, and creative endeavours at Layrd. From pop-ups and workshops to factory tours and socials, this blog post will take you through some of the highlights of the month.

Future Spaces Pop-Up at Tarkett's Atelier

In August we held our last pop-up event in the run-up to Future Spaces 2024, with a lino printing workshop at the Tarkett Atelier in Clerkenwell. Accompanied by refreshments, food, and a bit of networking, our attendees got hands-on experience making prints and tote bags using Tarkett’s own linoleum products. Despite some confusion over reverse carving, we were really impressed by everyone’s creations.

Future Spaces is only one month away and the free tickets are nearly gone. Book your spot before they go.

Culture and Connection

August was not just about work; it was also a time for us to strengthen our team. Our annual Summer Social was a hit, testing our ability to work together in escape rooms, having delicious food and spending lots of time in the sun.

We believe that a strong company culture is the backbone of our success. Events like these help us connect on a personal level, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment that translates across our projects. They also provide a perfect opportunity to spend time with our extended team.

Innovative Flooring Solutions at Altro's HQ

Our visit to Altro's headquarters this month was an eye-opener. We explored their latest innovative flooring solutions that combine durability with aesthetic appeal. The factory tour gave us new insight into their production process and approach to sustainability. Sam, Gina and Eleanor Penny got stuck into some practical workshops, learning how to make desk stands from Altro’s Whiterock and got competitive in a welding competition.

The tour gave us invaluable ideas about how we can incorporate these solutions into our designs to enhance installation functionality and style in commercial spaces.

Inspiration from Interface's Etched & Threaded Collection

Interface joined us in the studio this month for a breakfast and learn. The intro to their product ranges left the designers feeling inspired. Looking to the Etched & Threaded collection, our office designer, Eleanor Penny, pulled together a flat lay drawing on the collection's themes of zoning in and finding your zen. Across the collection, Interface weaves in the warmth of luxury textiles with the geometric flow of natural stone, combining sustainable thinking with timeless style, made to last.

Exploring New Products with Solus Ceramics

Our exploration of new products with Solus Ceramics was another highlight of August. Their extensive range of tiles offers endless possibilities for creative expression.

From bold geometric patterns to subtle, earthy textures, we are eager to bring more of these versatile materials into our designs, and we are eagerly counting down the days to see Solus’ sponsorship spot at Future Spaces.

August at Sketch & Social

Despite a few scheduling hiccups around the weather, our August meetup in Cambridge was a success. The picturesque setting outside St. Mary's Church provided the perfect backdrop for our cityscape sketching session, which was accompanied by the live music of a street violinist. We were thrilled to see so many familiar faces and welcome new members to our creative community.

Our August meetup in Ely was a plant lover's paradise. The Yard provided the ideal environment for sketching the beautiful plants around us. Whether sketcher brought their own leafy subject or chose to capture the local flora, there were plenty of opportunities for inspiration. It was our most popular Ely meetup to date, and we’re excited to welcome everyone back in September.

If you’re interested in joining us at either September event, book for free here.
