Layrd Life: June 2024

Imagine designing from the Swiss Alps! June has been an exciting month for Layrd Design, with our gym design lead, Gina, working remotely from her van in Switzerland, an event-packed few weeks with Layrd’s 5th birthday party, Elevate, and our first time attending The Mix Awards.

Layrd’s Birthday Party at Cambridge Innovation Parks

After Layrd turned five last month, we hosted our birthday celebrations in the Stirling House coworking space at Cambridge Innovation Parks, a project we have recently completed. We invited our valued suppliers, clients and other industry experts to join us for a shuffleboarding tournament with pizza and drinks. It was great to catch up with everyone who has been a part of Layrd’s journey and growth since 2019.

The Mix Awards

Both Emily Gray, our Studio Manager, and Emily Batten, our Stadia Designer, were invited to Zip Water’s table at the 2024 Mix Awards, hosted at the Evolution London in Battersea. Zip Water is joining us in September as a sponsor at our Future Spaces event, where we'll be immersed in the future of sustainable and wellbeing-focused commercial interiors.

At the Mix Awards, we were greeted by a brass band with welcome drinks and a three-course meal before the ceremony began. It was great to see so many of our connections and suppliers nominated. Tarkett, another of our sponsors for Future Spaces won the award for best flooring!

Remote Working in Switzerland

Gina, our Head of Gym Design, recently spent three weeks working remotely from her campervan in Switzerland. At Layrd Design, we understand the importance of workplace flexibility, and how this can impact both employee motivation and wellbeing. Gina has returned with a greater appreciation for ergonomic office furniture – apparently the van isn’t particularly comfortable in contrast to our adaptable and personalised studio – alongside a deeper concern for how our spaces can impact our planet.

“I enjoyed an exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum on the Future of Energy. It explored novel ways to generate and harness energy, through concepts like the Ground Fridge and cycling power.”

We're also proud to have had Gina as part of our team for two years now, and can't wait to see her ever-evolving approach to sustainable spaces!

Exhibiting at Elevate

The team stayed in London for three days in July, exhibiting at Elevate, the UK’s leading B2B event for physical activity, health and performance among some of our key suppliers. Alongside providing a fantastic opportunity to connect with new businesses, we left feeling inspired and ready to push the boundaries of design, already considering how we can make a statement with our stand in 2025.

June at Sketch & Social

In June, we held three Sketch & Social meetups. We started with a Paint Your Pet session and our first outdoor event of the year at Parker’s Piece in central Cambridge. This theme came back around at our new Ely meetup in The Yard, where we had a few furry visitors model for us. The Amber B Pottery X Sketch & Social collab also returned in June with another workshop at The Waterman Cam, where attendees learnt pinching, coiling and slab building. You can find out about our next Sketch & Social events here.
