RIVERLANE PHASE TWO

Riverlane Phase Two
Cambridge

Layrd Design completed the second phase of this Interior Design, Project Management and FF&E scheme in October of 2023. Riverlane is an innovative quantum computing firm based in central Cambridge and worked with us on its first phase of office design in the summer of 2021.

The brief was to expand their space from phase one as the company has grown significantly. We needed to physically represent this growth by introducing an extravagant reception area and developing the existing look and feel by taking interior branding a step further.

The main reception wall is a key feature in the completed scheme, designed to stand out in the sector. The ply wall takes inspiration from computer chips, which are often represented as luminous and full of energy. Lark Valley Woodcraft replicated this feel, installing the wall and LED lighting strips behind it. Komfort Partitioning installed an electric wall alongside this, which displays an abstract visualisation of quantum computer systems. We worked with CIM Signs and Graphics on the LED company sign to tie the scheme together, alongside all of the meeting room signage.

Careful consideration of neurodivergent design and diverse working styles was integral throughout this workplace, with areas dedicated to quiet focus working and semi-private spaces including meeting rooms and booths. We also needed to integrate informal meeting areas to encourage connection and community, such as collaborative tables and tea points with sofas.

We designed the space for employee well-being and comfort, with biophilic elements distributed throughout, including large-scale plants and storage planters provided by Plant Plan. We also integrated soundproofing acoustic treatments in new meeting rooms and open-plan areas with calming and focus-enhancing properties that reduce noise distractions.

“Working with Layrd Design was a pleasure from start to finish. Will took time to understand our brief and returned with a stunning yet practical design for our new offices.

They project managed the whole installation, communicated clearly with us throughout, and we have a fabulous new space, designed to encourage collaboration and innovation among our technical teams.

SUSTAINABLE

CHOICES

In the lead-up to this project, we coordinated the Cat A fit-out and preparation of the space to prevent wasted materials. We also reused as much of the existing furniture from the first phase as possible, and when we did need to source new furniture to support Riverlane's growth, our designers specified sustainable suppliers such as Orangebox. Sustainable flooring solutions were used across the space, with recyclable Tarkett vinyl and Shaw carpet tiles. The AllSfar acoustic treatments used throughout the design are made from recycled plastic.
